1972
The Competition History of RAD 366G - Marcos 1600GT :1968-1974

Timeline on technical events (1972):
Over the winter, I had decided to continue racing but with a full race setup now.
Stan and Tony built up a new engine using a Ford block bored out to 85mm, which now gave us an engine capacity of 1760 cc. We also chose the Broadspeed BCF3 full race cam.
We needed to resolve the problem of failing oil pressure on fast right-handers, particularly Church Corner at Thruxton. The best way to remedy this was to install a dry sump system which Stan created. We had sump/scavenge tank, a collection tank and an overflow tank plus and an array of pipework. The battery had to be relocated to the passenger footwell. Quite a sight but it all worked.
We also put in a limited slip differential as the car was slowing dramatically at chicanes with the inner rear wheel lifting.
Stan also found a light weight bonnet and boot lid from somewhere.
This covers the third of a set of major modifications carried out by Stan and Tony at Trowbridge over the winter. I have taken the following details from his bill of 20th April.
- Carry out full engine rebuild to racing specification. Make up exhaust system and modify manifold.
- Make up dry sump system and reservoir tanks.
- Modify cylinder head
- Lighten and polish conn rods
- Machine new 85mm pistons
- Overhaul rear axle and fit Limited slip differential.
- Overhaul brakes
- Check front suspension
- Fit Perspex windows and panels
- Fit (borrowed) lightweight bonnet and boot lid
- Fit (borrowed) long range fuel tank - My guess is that it was added at this stage
- 1 special block from Hillthorne Eng. Bored out with liners for 85mm pistons.
- 4 conn rods
- 1 manifold
- 1 oil cooler
- BCF3 camshaft
- 1 cylinder head
- 2 SU Electric fuel pumps
- Perspex door bits
- 1 three core radiator
- 1 set brake pads
- 1 set clutch parts
- R 40 racing oil
Tyres:
I continued to use the 175x550 13 type 350 tyres from the previous year with the 7” Minilites.
From May 1972, I used wider wheels. 8” front and 8 ½” Minilites.

However, there was a collision at the race start which took out some quicker cars in my class giving me the class lead which I held onto the end coming in 7th overall. Won a gallon of Chevron oil.
